Quote from J@tko : Brilliant reply

What about this one:

Quote :I have been saying this is silly for ages. I refer to it as the "Paris Hilton stomp", as I couldn't quite convey how far from the reality of skillful race-car driving this technique is. It's how I imagine Paris Hilton would react in an automatic 4x4 in a road accident - scream, and stomp on all the controls simultaneously.

But more seriously, Kunos' take on this:

Quote :Interesting thread, the good old hit the brakes to save a spin debate :P

Some thoughts about the issure;

I hope you all realize that the car will align itself to have the side with less grip "forward", ie, in the direction of travel. 2 simple way to prove it: get a pen a throw it on the floor, it'll rotate in a pretty random fashion. Now stick a rubber to one side of the pen and repeate; the pen will always stop rotating straight away, align to the direction of travel with the rubber end BEHIND. The hard way to test this is to get in a parking lot, get some speed, hands off the steering wheel, pull the hand brake and woooosh, ur rear end will end up where your nose was pointing. Simple reason is that the rear tyres locked up loosing much of their directional grip. I hope we all agree about this.

So let's apply the hand brake thing in reverse, to our front tyres, if they lock up first what is it going to happen? Racing school will teach you that the car "won't turn with locked front tyres".. that is right, but it is only part of the story, actually, locked front tyres will align the car into the direction of travel; that is a more complete description.

So if you manage to lock your front without locking your rears you will save pretty much every slide, even a 180 degress slide (remember the car reaction with the hand brake? it swapped ends).

On to the sims now... how come it is so easy to get into this situation of locked fronts and unlocked rears in the sims? Let's see some of the reasons:

- Brake pedal resolution. In real life, brakes work with pressure and the limit is strength you have in ur foot. In a sim, the brake pressure is determined by a pedal position, with a definite minimum and maximum. The maximum is often set to maximise the control and usage of the brake pedal in normal situations. If a real car has a potential braking torque of X but this (as it often is the case) overpower the tyres potential grip the sim is often set to have the maximum a little above the tyre limit. This avoids having that terrible feeling of locking tyres as soon you touch the brake. It is often the case that this value is not enough to lock the rear tyres (more rotational inertia, more grip and all that stuff) so you get that behaviour you condemn. In real life this would be probably a "PANIC" manouver, just hit the brake as hard as you get.. but there is no "maximum" in real life, so it would be impossible to reproduce it in a constant way as in the sims. In RL you'll have to find the right pressure needed to lock the fronts and not the rears.. and consistently repeat this in a PANIC situation. Still asking yourself why nobody really bothers teaching this stuff? In RL you fix it the right way (tm): you avoid the spin in the first place

- Setup. If we get a 100% front brake bias, we'll be able to save pretty much every slide. Is it cheating? No, it's just stupid! it means we're giving up optimal brake distribution (thus, lap times) to save our asses when we make a mistake. No driver nor engineer in with a sane brain would even think about this.

- Finally, potential software bugs. It happens, I've been there all my life . It's important to make sure a rear tyre at high slip angles will lock instantly even with very low braking torque. But heavy front biased braking and gas on will still save the slide if the brake pedal maximum is set too low.

Want to prove all these things right? Get in your favourite sim and set the brake gain as high as you can ( you should be able to lock tyres with 20% brake pressure) then slide, brake hard and watch the car completing the spin slowly coming to a stop , just as we see on TV.

Sorry for the rant.. I love this topic :P

Anglo-Saxons moaning about ABC *sigh*

You guys are very lucky to not really know what a genuinely bad sport coverage is

I'd still take Scott Goodyear and Marty Reid over 85+% of the commentators we have here in France. Not that I rate Scott or Marty so highly BTW.

__

(OFF TOPIC) In case you are wondering, here's what a bad French racing coverage looks like:

a) Actual coverage starting several seconds before the lights go out, or AFTER the lights go out.

b) Commentator not focussing on the action when the lights go out, or even worse, finishing the broadcast INTRODUCTION(!) when the lights go out.

c) The broadcast has only 1 commentator(OK, can be understandable if the channel is small).

d) Half of the commetaries consist of over-the-top drivel about one/several driver(OK, Americans have Danica, but it's not even half of the madness we have to face. And at least female drivers are/used to be a novelty, while male French racing drivers are NOT a novelty, at least not for the last 100 years or so.

e) Includes stupid and random bad-mouthing, or even insults from one of the commentators, toward one driver in particular, for no proper reason(includes: Luis Razia has nothing to do in GP2[while he's a series race winner], Adrian Sutil is an moron, beca ... not give way to red cars[well, why should he, when he's in the same lap], Katherine Legge and Simona de Silvestro are only there because of their gender, while Ana Beatriz is the real deal[yea, obviously driving an AA/Chevy instead of a Slotus helps...]).

e2) Commentator withdraws the insult in question, when he realises that the driver he just insulted is French(= Jacques Laffite on Charles Pic, at the latest Spanish GP:doh

f) Commentators have no clue on basic rules of the series they comment on, like points systems.

g) Commentators can't identify one car/bike by the number or the livery.

h) (Indy 500 one) Coverage misses half of the pre-race ceremonies, because the highlights of a 10 GT3s race in Navarra are so much more important than the Indy 500.

i) I guess I could go on, can't recall of more at the moment.

Quote from heson :Americanized rallycross, what do you think?

I missed 2011 completely but the 2012 looks interesting.
More power than europeean, all tarmac (but with waterspray in some corner), shortcut instead of Joker (but that might be due to possible track layout).

Is this worth watching?

It reminds me a lot of Istambul overall.

Uphill T1 is a lot like A1/Red Bull Ring as Hyperactive said.

"Stadium" section(1:20) is a lot like Hockenheim's final sector. It hurts the flow of the track and isn't very necessary, but I get it, they gotta park the fans somewhere.

Does anyone have a race set to share? Thanks in advance.

What's the procedure? Is it a timed session, or a "superpole"?

In other news... Dragon is back to a single car operation. Couldn't get a 2nd engine lease. Bourdais and Legge will have share the ride for the rest of the season: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com ... y-for-bourdais-and-legge/

Not a great day for IndyCar it seems

Miller reveals it all: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com ... -most-repulsive-revolt/P1

Quote :It doesn’t matter if it was Michael Andretti making the calls or that Mario wants a change; this movement was started by John Barnes and Tony George, with a silent endorsement from Kevin Kalkhoven, based on everything I’ve heard or been told. Roger Penske was calling for the hangman a few weeks ago but evidently has changed his mind.

In a nutshell, they’re pissed about TurboGate, excessive fines, the quality of the cars and how much more the new cars cost than promised.

Quote :I’m hearing they want Bernard sacked and either Steve Horne or Brian Barnhart, or both, to take control.

(Come on now, Brian Barnhart??)

Quote from Mustafur :If its Micheal Andretti we may have a problem.

That's unlikely, with all the work he's doing to promote the series.

The most popular rumours say it's John Barnes of Panther, with the support of Tony George.

Meh. Let's just wait and see now. No need to feed the filthy gossips.

Quote from TFalke55 :I think it could be HVM since there now is a rule that they have to stay with a supplier throughout the year. If they get out of the top-22 they loose the chance to get IndyCar's grant

No way this is HVM alone. Wiggins is the owner with the least influence right now. 1 car team, and only team on Lotus power. His team is in a very dire situation right now, but he just isn't in position to whine. No other team owner would stand for him, since he's the only one concerned by this problem right now, and he has put himself in his situation - unlike other former Lotus teams, he had actually chosen the Lotus in the first place.

The series has a very healthy car count right now. Wiggins might have a marketable driver with strong sponsors, but 25 entries isn't much different to 26. If he's unhappy, he could aswell be shown the door. Just see what happened to Conquest and Shank.

BTW, I personally think that Wiggins is in good terms with the series right now. You know why? He basically received 300.000$+ price money for a start and park at Indy, thanks to IndyCar's, Chevy's and Honda's decision to secure two slots for Lotus.

__

The owner(s) in question are most likely part of Chevrolet roster - the turbo gate has left a few people very sore and angry. Randy Bernard has stated it isn't Roger Penske. Robin Miller has stated it isn't Dennis Reinbold.

Let's just wait and see before dragging names in the dirt, IMO.

If you appreciate Randy's work and hope he stays as IndyCar CEO, please consider signing this petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com ... rd-as-the-ceo-of-indycar/

Online petitions might not be world changers, but the least we can do as fans is to show support to people like Randy, who care and work hard for the sport we love

Quote from DieKolkrabe :He's under contract for ESPN and drag racing, why they put him there I got no clue, he's most famous for being the voice of the 500

I have no clue either. If I recall correctly, I've once read some sort of speculation saying that Tony George asked for his head a few years ago for whatever reason(too close to CART? he used to be commentating both IRL and CART at that time, not a very comfortable position), but that may just be BS, I don't know.

But if that's true, maybe he could come back at some point, now that TG has stepped back.

Quote from DieKolkrabe :Oh and ESPN needs commentators who actually know their stuff. It's said every year, but....ESPN, bring back Paul Page. Or let him do what he did last year, offer insight for the radio network and stories

About Paul Page:

Quote :I was walking through gasoline alley today after the public drivers meeting when I heard his unmistakable voice. I turned around and sure enough it was Paul Page. I went up to him and said hello. He was very nice and talked to me for probably 5 minutes. I told him it would be great to see him on TV for indycar, to which he replied that he would love to do it. He said that he is under contract through December with whoever he has a contract with now. He seemed extremely enthusiastic talking about coming back to Indy. He also said that he heard about Bob Jenkins situation back in December. He said that the old Delta Force intro themes were made at the race track 2 days before the race, and now they are full productions that cost $200,000. he did say that he looks at YouTube comments and that he appreciates the support from everyone that would like him back in the series. I got a picture with him, made my day.

http://www.trackforum.com/foru ... 164947-Just-saw-Paul-Page

Not sure if the $200,000 figure is true, but if it is... Just wow. The Delta Force intros still beat most of the new ones IMO. Although the new ones may be more appealing to the casual fans, I don't know.

Secodning an NBC stream

Was 2009 that good though? I don't recall so much of it, just an anti-climatic last stint with Helio-Dan-Danica 1-2-3 from green to checkers.

But that said, Helio winning right after the end of his tax evasion trial was a fantastic story line

Quote from DeadWolfBones :Nice win by Guerrieri. Shame it couldn't go the distance under green, though.

Too bad for the finish under yellow, but kudos to the drivers for keeping it green for over 30 laps in a row. I don't think many were expecting that.

Great job from Guerrieri, 18th to 1st in 38 laps is impressive.

Vautier was awesome too, leading most of the race in his first ever oval race. I have the feeling he could challenge Bourdais and Pagenaud as the leading French in IndyCars for the years to come.

Those cars may be a bit dangerous to race on the ovals, but they sure make a wonderful show.

Lauda's crash and recovery makes one good story line, and so do Hunt's "interresting" way of life, but I'm affraid it leaves a certain void in the scenario.

I just hope they won't fill that void by enhancing a special "rivalry" aspect that just wasn't there. Correct me if I'm wrong(and I could well be wrong, I wasn't born yet back then), but Hunt and Lauda weren't bitter enemies. Both had very different styles, and both were very emblematic personalities in the F1 paddock, but that's about all. Theye never had any controversial incidents between each other, and they didn't even get to fight against each other on the long term - 1976 was the only year thet went head-to-head for the F1 championship.

Very far from the Prost vs Senna, Piquet vs Mansell, or even the Schumacher vs Hill rivalries, for example.

That said, making films out of real historic events can be pretty hard to do, if you wish to remain accurate. This is why I'm surprised they didn't just decide to just go the easy way and stick with a fictionnal scenario, still based on the mid-1970s era. But anyway, best of luck to them.
